Ji-Young Kim – Cello
South Korean-born cellist Ji-Young Kim began her professional musical education at the age of 13 at the renowned Juilliard School in New York City, making her debut at Carnegie Weill Hall that same year. She garnered international recognition early on, winning the 29th Chamber Music Society for Young Musicians competition at Lincoln Center and subsequently receiving the "Stephen Kates Cello Award." Furthermore, she is a laureate of numerous international competitions, including 1st Prize at the Krakow International Music Competition (Opus 2021), the 12th New York Music Competition, and the Concours International Eurochestries "Jeunes talents en musique classique" in France. As a sought-after soloist, her recent performances include concerts with the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock and the Bremen Symphony Orchestra, as well as guest appearances with the Bremen Philharmonic. Her concert engagements have taken her throughout Germany and beyond—to name just a few of the most renowned venues: the Berlin Philharmonie, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Gewandhaus and the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig, the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart, the Arena Leipzig, and most recently, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Berlin.

Alongside her solo career, Ji-Young Kim has distinguished herself as an outstanding orchestral and chamber musician. Her orchestral career, which began in the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra, quickly led her to principal positions. She served as principal cellist of the International Young Orchestral Academy (IJOA) at the Bayreuth Easter Festival under the baton of Matthias Foremny, and as associate principal cellist of the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra & Academy, with whom she participated in a CD production for Sony Classical under Jan Vogler. Further artistic engagements have included work with the Staatskapelle Halle and the Kammerakademie Halle, among others. Ji-Young Kim is also in high demand off the stage: she has given interviews for MDR Aktuell and at IJOA press conferences, and has participated in advertising campaigns for the historic Leipzig music publisher, Edition Peters.

On an international level, she is particularly active as a chamber musician, making regular guest appearances on stages throughout Europe, the USA, Korea, and Indonesia. Currently based in Berlin, she places a special artistic focus on trio and quartet formations. In her native South Korea, she frequently performs with contemporary music ensembles in Seoul and is a highly valued chamber music partner at the Busan Maru International Music Festival and the Busan Chamber Festival. Pedagogical work is also of particular importance to her: following many years of teaching at academies and schools in Dresden and Leipzig, she now passes on her experience as a lecturer in Berlin and Seoul, and regularly teaches as a guest lecturer in Jakarta.

Ji-Young Kim completed her studies in the soloist class, earning her Konzertexamen (highest artist diploma) under Prof. Tanja Tetzlaff. She has received further significant artistic inspiration in masterclasses with renowned musical figures such as Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Philippe Muller, Julian Steckel, Myung-Wha Chung, Maria Kliegel, the Artemis Quartet, Thomas Riebl, and Gustav Rivinius.

Als gefragte Solistin konzertierte sie zuletzt mit der Norddeutschen Philharmonie Rostock und dem Sinfonieorchester Bremen zu Gast bei den Bremer Philharmonikern. Ihre Konzerttätigkeit führte sie dabei durch ganz Deutschland und darüber hinaus – um nur einige der renommiertesten Säle zu nennen: die Berliner Philharmonie, das Konzerthaus Berlin, das Gewandhaus und die Nikolaikirche in Leipzig, die Stuttgarter Porsche-Arena, die Arena Leipzig sowie zuletzt die Botschaft der Republik Korea in Berlin.

Neben ihrer solistischen Laufbahn profiliert sich Ji-Young Kim als herausragende Orchester- und Kammermusikerin. Ihre Orchesterkarriere, die im Juilliard Symphony Orchestra ihren Anfang nahm, führte sie rasch in führende Positionen. So wirkte sie als Solocellistin der Internationalen Jungen Orchesterakademie (IJOA) beim Bayreuther Osterfestival unter der Leitung von Matthias Foremny sowie als stellvertretende Solocellistin des Moritzburg Festival Orchesters & Akademie, mit dem sie unter Jan Vogler an einer CD-Produktion für Sony Classical mitwirkte. Weitere künstlerische Engagements verbanden sie unter anderem mit der Staatskapelle Halle und der Kammerakademie Halle. Auch abseits der Bühne ist Ji-Young Kim gefragt: Sie gab Interviews für MDR Aktuell sowie im Rahmen von Pressekonferenzen der IJOA und wirkte an Werbekampagnen für den traditionsreichen Leipziger Musikverlag Edition Peters mit.

Auf internationaler Ebene ist sie besonders als Kammermusikerin aktiv und gastiert regelmäßig auf den Bühnen Europas, der USA, Koreas und Indonesiens. Gegenwärtig legt sie in Berlin einen besonderen künstlerischen Fokus auf Trio- und Quartettformationen. In ihrer südkoreanischen Heimat tritt sie kontinuierlich mit Ensembles für zeitgenössische Musik in Seoul auf und ist zudem eine geschätzte Kammermusikpartnerin beim Busan Maru International Music Festival sowie dem Busan Chamber Festival. Ein besonderes Anliegen ist ihr die pädagogische Arbeit: Nach langjähriger Lehrtätigkeit an Akademien und Schulen in Dresden und Leipzig gibt sie ihre Erfahrung heute als Dozentin in Berlin und Seoul weiter und lehrt zudem regelmäßig als Gastdozentin in Jakarta.

Ihr Studium in der Solistenklasse schloss Ji-Young Kim mit dem Konzertexamen bei Prof. Tanja Tetzlaff ab. Wichtige künstlerische Impulse erhielt sie darüber hinaus in Meisterkursen bei Musikerpersönlichkeiten wie Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Philippe Muller, Julian Steckel, Myung-Wha Chung, Maria Kliegel, dem Artemis Quartett, Thomas Riebl und Gustav Rivinius.
